Press Release Regarding The Unsc Resolution 1874 (2009) Concerning The Nuclear Test Conducted By The Democratic People’s Republic Of Korea , 16.06.2009
On 12 June 2009, convening under the Presidency of Turkey, the UN Security Council has unanimously adopted the Resolution 1874, as a response to the nuclear and missile tests performed by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) on 25 May 2009, and in its aftermath.
Compared with the previous Resolution 1718, the Resolution 1874 introduces restrictions on the financial transactions and the defence industry of the DPRK; moreover, it contains provisions regarding the interdiction of the vessels navigating in open seas, trading with the DPRK.
We are concerned of the DPRK Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ statement dated 13 June 2009, in reaction to the UNSCR 1874, indicating that it will weaponize extracted plutonium and commence the process of uranium enrichment.
We invite the DPRK to act responsibly and to cooperate with the international community on the basis of the relevant UNSC Resolutions. We remain convinced that all efforts for the revitalization of the Six-Party Talks, which we support since its inception, should be sustained. As the current President of the UNSC and DPRK Sanctions Committee, our support for the settlement of the DPRK nuclear issue through diplomatic means will continue.
